Background: The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging at Hunter College (“Brookdale”), is an internationally recognized academic gerontology center founded in 1975. Co-located at Hunter’s East Harlem complex with the Silberman School of Social Work and the School of Urban Public Health, Brookdale advances a multi-disciplinary approach to aging and longevity by developing, implementing and evaluating cutting-edge programs and practices, and disseminating those that work; such as daily money management services that protect elderly and disabled adults from financial exploitation and may enable them to remain at home instead of placed in residential care facilities, and programs that neighborhood senior centers can offer to help people manage chronic health problems and improve their quality of life. Brookdale also pioneered the development of an innovative community-based adult day service program for Alzheimer’s patients and respite services for their caregivers.
With $1.96 million in grant money and over 40 staff, Brookdale now provides workforce development and education in gerontology through courses, workshops, and conferences. Brookdale advocates for older adults through its Samuel Sadin Institute on Law and Rights of Older Adults, Article 81 Caregiver Training, and the Reingold Elder Abuse Prevention Project.
The Position: The Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging is seeking an outstanding individual to be its new Executive Director. Reporting to the Provost of Hunter College, the Executive Director will be an energetic, creative, and dedicated leader who will build on Brookdales's strengths and strategically shape its future growth in the areas of gerontological research, program development, and program evaluation. He or she must be a dynamic individual who can expand Brookdale’s ability to undertake initiatives in public policy, advocacy, education and laws affecting the elderly.
The Executive Director will be an experienced practitioner who will also hold a full-time, non-tenured track faculty appointment as Distinguished Lecturer.
Specific Responsibilities: • Broaden Brookdale’s capacity to identify and develop innovative research and pilot program initiatives to be undertaken in conjunction with Hunter College faculty and/or community-based organizations, foundations, and government agencies • Collaborate with Hunter’s Schools of Nursing and the Health Professions, Silberman School of Social Work, Roosevelt House, and School of Arts and Sciences to expand opportunities for gerontology education at Hunter College • Steer the development of Brookdale’s role as a resource to researchers and service providers about trends and innovations in gerontology • In collaboration with the Hunter Development office, work closely with Brookdale’s Board of Overseers, private foundations, individual donors and government agencies to pursue public and private funding for policy, advocacy and elder law projects • Foster a research climate to help enable staff to develop research proposals • Perform teaching duties • Represent Brookdales’s policy and advocacy expertise in the wider community
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree required, doctorate or professional degree highly preferred • Record of achievement in a profession or field of expertise related to teaching assignments, preferably in public policy, public health, gerontology or health administration • Professionally recognized expertise in the field of aging, with a record of increasing responsibility in research development, program planning, administration, and staff management • Ability to work collaboratively and foster working partnerships with Hunter College faculty, community-based organizations and foundations to plan and implement pilot programs • Demonstrated success in securing public and private funds for research and staff development
