The Forensic Mental Health Counselor provides professional mental health forensic services including screening, counseling, crisis intervention and continuing care services.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Napa Conditional Release Program (CONREP) is contracted with the California Department of State Hospitals Forensic Branch to provide outpatient supervision and treatment for State Hospital patients who have been deemed appropriate for community placement. These patients are committed to the program by the Court or the Parole Board as Incompetent to Stand Trial due to a Mental Disorder, as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity, or as Mentally Disordered Offenders. Job duties include: Conduct forensically-oriented individual and group therapy and case management; Conduct unannounced home visits and searches; Conduct collateral contacts with significant others in clients' lives; Supervise urine collection for testing for illegal substances; Prepare clinical case histories and treatment plans and maintain clinical case notes and documentation of services provided; Prepare quarterly and annual reports for the courts; Prepare and maintain records and billing as per the requirements of the Conditional Release Program; Conduct placement evaluations of Penal Code patients involving review of criminal and psychiatric records, and interviews with hospital/jail staff and the defendants, and then make written recommendations to the courts; Monitor Penal Code inpatients being treated at the State Hospitals (Napa, Atascadero and Patton) for readiness for community treatment via Liaison Visits and Reports; Provide On-Call coverage on a rotating basis.
Experience and Education To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:
Experience: Sufficient post-masters experience providing treatment and counseling in a mental health agency to obtain required licensure. Experience in a forensic setting is highly desired.
Education: Possession of a Master's degree with a major in social work, clinical or counseling psychology, or a closely related behavioral science field, and completion of a university approved clinical internship in a mental health agency.
Required License: Possession of any of the following valid licenses issued by the State of California: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor**, Licensed Clinical Psychologist or Registered Intern or Associate Clinical Social Worker who is licensable within one year.
**Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) must include the additional training and education to treat couples or families, as required under BPC section 4999.20(a)(3)(A).
